Working Over Time E29

The 38 watercolour images in Aurora Consurgens depict complex alchemical metaphors breaking down male-female, human-natural, and body-spirit dualisms, and express the connections and mutability between the experiential human and abstract spiritual worlds.

This painting, Number 15, shows two knights jousting. A golden sun forms the head of the male figure on the left, mounted upon a golden lion. He wears a blue armor coat over grey brown mail and carries a black shield bearing three silver lunar crescents. His opponent is a naked female figure mounted side-saddle on a winged griffin, the front part in blue eagle form, the rear part a golden lion. She appears to have three heads, echoing the three crescent moons on her opponent’s shield: one in the form of a silvery full moon, one in recognizably human features behind it (which seem to have been effaced), and the golden sun on her blue shield, which mirrors her opponent’s head. It’s a wonderful mashup of gender stereotypes, Christian tropes, and alchemical mysteries.
